Alum deeply appreciative of Camas community for supporting schools

Growing up, it can be all too easy to take things for granted. It wasn’t until after I graduated from CHS and left for college, that I first realized not everyone gets to go to school in a district like Camas. In fact, my exemplary schooling experience was rare—few kids spend their K-12 years in a single district that so passionately cares about its students and their families; not many are able to pursue art, sports, music, drama, robotics and more—all supported by an all-star staff and top-quality facilities. Only some learn within buildings and classrooms where they feel safe, cared for, and inspired. But students in Camas do, and that’s why I’m supporting the upcoming bond.

A YES vote on the bond is a vote to ensure that Camas students, for years to come, are able to enjoy the same excellent opportunities and experiences afforded to me. In the six years since I graduated from CHS, I’ve been reminded time and again what a great foundation 12 years in Camas schools provided.

Camas provides quality education

Camas provides quality education

As longtime residents of Camas, we have been very fortunate to have had both our daughters attend Camas schools from kindergarten thru graduation at Camas High School.

It has been the continual improvements to both the physical facilities and the quality of the teachers and academic selection that have provided them with a solid foundation and opportunity to attend the college of their choice.

We have witnessed a tremendous population growth in the last 27 years and are quite impressed with how the Camas School District has done everything under the sun in the way of bonds and levies to keep up with this growth and improve the quality of education simultaneously. It is critical at this juncture in our community’s success to do whatever we can to make sure that the 2016 CSD bond passes with flying colors. The schools are bulging at the seams.

I am writing to support the Camas School District bond scheduled for the Feb. 9 ballot.

As a third-generation Camas alum and fourth-generation Camasonian, this community holds a special place in my heart. My husband and I moved our young family back to Camas a few years ago so that we could plant our roots in the very place that made me.

My various volunteer roles that I have taken on with the Camas School District have confirmed my support for our schools. I see an administration who makes a priority to partner with not only its staff, students and parents, but with the city and community members as well. I see teachers who care about their students outside of the classroom. I see students who are taught lessons beyond reading, writing and arithmetic.

As a Camas resident, I’d like you to consider how many times you are reminded of the very real contribution of Camas schools to our community.

Is it your new neighbors who say they moved here just for the reputation of the K-12 program? Is it your realtor or business colleagues who comment on the monetary benefits they experience daily, with a direct tie to the tradition of quality schools? I’m guessing it’s all of the above.

Beginning in 1994, our citizens began a generous trend of support for the brick and mortar facilities connected to school bonds when they funded Skyridge Middle School. That was followed with more bonding approval in 1999 and 2007 — ultimately leading to the current CHS as well as four new schools, a stadium and renovation to many other district facilities.

We are writing to voice our support for the Camas School District capital projects bond that will be on the ballot Feb. 9.

When our family moved to Clark County almost 11 years ago, foremost on our list for choosing a community to call home was a vibrant school system for our two young daughters.

After investigating the many excellent communities in Southwest Washington, we chose Camas above all others because of the schools. High test scores were not the factor that led us to this decision. It was the impressive, engaging and welcoming principals and staff we met at three different elementary schools while on school tours, coupled with apparent and visible parent-volunteers.
